Telluride Helitrax guides work hard all winter to ensure our guests are getting the best possible conditions and are having the best time on their adventure of a lifetime. But, what are they up to in the summer? We caught up with Bill Allen to answer just that.
Telluride Helitrax: Hey Bill, thanks for taking the time to catch up with us. What have you been up to this summer?
Bill Allen: It’s been a busy summer, I took off right after ski season and headed to Nepal for my third expedition to Mount Everest with Mountain Trip. The Everest climb is basically a 2 month commitment, so I was gone from the end of March until the end of May. We had a great trip, everyone submitted so it was a success. But, it’s a long time to be away from my family. I was then home for about two weeks in early June before heading to Denali with a good friend/client and his son. It was great to be on skis again as we traveled up to Camp 3 before switching over to crampons for the upper mountain. We had a great (quick) trip on Denali, summited and were back home in Colorado in about 16 days. I finally settled back into life at home in the San Juans by the end of June and was around Telluride for the 4th of July, for the first time ever. (more…)
Telluride Helitrax Offers Special Helicopter Assisted Backcountry Touring
It’s been one of the best seasons on record, delivering over 20 feet of snow to our terrain already this winter. To celebrate, we are offering new, helicopter assisted backcountry touring trips for groups ranging in size from one person to four people. Heli-assisted backcountry touring trips are perfect for established skiers/boarders looking to experience a new, hard to reach zone and/or professional guiding in an area they have not been before.
In order to embark on a helicopter assisted backcountry touring day with Telluride Helitrax, each person in the group must have their own touring equipment (and know how to use it) and must be proficient at touring. This trip option is perfect for established backcountry tourers with good fitness.
The cost for single drops is calculated by how many people are in the group and the flight time to reach the drop off destination-
1 Guest – $375 plus flight time
2 Guests- $285 per person plus flight time
3 Guests- $260 per person plus flight time
4 Guests- $245 per person plus flight time
Flight time is $150 per minute (total). Each group will have one guide that will suggest drop off locations and touring that makes sense for the ability level of the group and current conditions. The group is certainly welcome to provide ideas for the day or let us know what they would like to ski. Most drop off locations are within five to eight minutes of our take off zone.
If helicopter assisted backcountry touring is of interest to you, please call our office at 970.728.8377 and request to talk to Joe. We will help you through pricing questions, ideas for your day and help you pick the perfect guide.
We hope you can join us on an adventure of a lifetime!
Last week’s storm dropped ample light, fluffy powder snow in our terrain in the San Juan Mountains. The skiing is the best it has been all season. The forecast calls for more snow through the weekend and mixed weather next week. If you’ve been thinking about helicopter skiing, the time is now!
Enjoy these photos from the past week.
Earlier this season we helped local ski company, Wagner Custom Skis, film a piece for Bloomberg Business. We had just received over 26 inches of snow and the skiing was great. We flew North and had fresh powder turns all day.

In the spring of 2015 two skiers joined us from ESPN Latino for a special on Telluride and heli-skiing with Telluride Helitrax. Luis and Carolina had a great time getting some turns in on our last day of the 2014-2015 ski season. The first half of the video below showcases their experience with us.
El Nino is headed our way this winter, but what does that mean for Telluride? And moreover, what does that mean for your helicopter skiing vacation?
El Nino typically favors the Southwest and we can expect a big winter in Telluride. We will likely see the affects of El Nino in time for Christmas. Multiple weather models are showing that the San Juan Mountains will see an above average winter and snow totals could be up, by up to 20%. Multiple models show this winter’s El Nino to be very strong, and some models are even predicting it will be the strongest El Nino the US has ever experienced.
Telluride Helitrax needs a new t-shirt and sweatshirt design, and we want you to create it! We’re giving away the perfect SWAG bag for the winner, complete with their new design on our t-shirts and sweatshirts.
The challenge is to create a design that embodies the true adventure and excitement of helicopter skiing and translates well onto garments. The decision is up to you to incorporate the Telluride Helitrax logo or not.

THE BIRD: JANUARY 22-24: Intro to Heli-Skiing for Women with Chicks with Stix!
This is a bucket list trip that will take you to some of the most beautiful spots in the San Juan Mountains to ski untracked powder with a gaggle of gals that know how to have fun. We think it’s as good as it gets, and know you will agree. Our team of women guides have years of experience working for Helitrax and are recognized as some of the best in the industry.
Angela Hawse has been guiding with Telluride Helitrax for six seasons and is a new co-owner of Chick with Picks. She designed this program and is looking forward to getting a great group of women together to experience heli-skiing in her backyard (and one of her favorites places to ski). Moreover, Angela is excited to help progress the skiing and the skill level of the group.
The warm-up day is a casual girls day out on Telluride Ski Resort. Nothing formal, just a gaggle of gals looking for the goods, sharing tips, techniques and exploring all the resort has to offer. This is not a guided day but your heli-ski guides will accompany you to get the lay of the land and send you down some of the finest runs in Telluride.
